(August 11, 2014) – With only three states and D.C. still in legislative session this year, the American Knife & Tool Institute is working on an ambitious legislation plan for 2015. In the coming months, watch for detailed news on our website and in our newsletters. Where AKTI cannot get complete prohibitions removed, we are rewriting laws to remove or clarify archaic and confusing terms that cause inconsistent or unreasonable punishments and to provide protection when traveling from location to location from a myriad of local laws.
We appreciate the understand and cooperation of many legislators willing to help AKTI rewrite laws to be reasonable and responsible. Thanks to Nevada State Senator Don Gustavson (R-14), Nevada is one of those states that AKTI knife legislation will provide substantial relief for knife owners. Senator Gustavson has already announced plans to introduce AKTI’s suggested bill language.
The legislative process takes substantial time, and frequently requires several legislative sessions to get bills passed. Efforts will also refocus on bills that were introduced in the last few years and have not moved forward, such as the gravity knife bill in the State of New York, knife preemption in South Carolina, and others.
