Bill would enact statewide knife preemption in Mississippi
Issue: Local knife laws
Summary: Provides that no county, municipality or political subdivision can adopt any ordinance, rule or regulation restricting the possession, sale, purchase, transfer, licensing, manufacture, ownership or use of a knife, knife making components or knives in a manner more restrictive than provided by state law. Would also repeal any existing local ordinances.
Status: Passed House on March 2. To Senate on March 3. Died in Committee March 22.
Introduced by: Representative Herb Frierson (R-106) on February 10.

The Mississippi Legislature convened on January 5, 2016 and is expected to adjourn May 8, 2016. The Governor’s projected deadline is August 25, 2016.
Effective date of legislation: Per Section 4 would take effect July 1, 2016.
