News Flash !!!  We need your letters to your two Senators and your
Congressman...

AKTI learned that at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on June 10, 2009, U.S. Customs has denied the AKTI
request for an extension of the comment period. This clearly shows that Customs has taken a very anti-
knife stance.

We must now ask our national lawmakers to help us. That should be the first letter you write. You can
find out who your lawmakers are and their email addresses by going to …

Find your congressional officials
Review our communication suggestions
This is the absolute # 1 action step you must take TODAY.
Please use one of the following letters to email your lawmakers

We need letters from every knife company, retailers, distributors, knife groups, collectors, and all
individuals. Your federal and state lawmakers need to know NOW that you do not want to be branded as
a criminal just because you use a knife on the job or for your recreational activities.
(You can also follow
up with a copy sent via regular mail or fax  to help reinforce your request.)

Be sure to personalize your letters
Individual Letter to Legislators as Word Document (.doc)
Individual Letter to Legislators as Rich Text File (.rtf)

Company Letter to Legislators as Word Document (.doc)
Company Letter to Legislators as Rich Text file (.rtf)
Now … if you have the time, please also voice your objections to U.S. Customs itself. You can only
use regular mail to them. Your letter must be received in the Washington Customs office officially  by
June 21st (but that’s a Sunday, so shoot for June 20 or sooner).

Address your letter to …

19 CFR Part 177
U.S. Customs and Border Protection
Office of International Trade, Regulations and Rulings
Attention: Intellectual Property and Restricted Merchandise Branch
Mint Annex,   799 Ninth St. N.W.
Washington, D.C.  20229

AKTI has created an Individual Model Letter to guide your comments to U.S. Customs.

Individual Response to Customs (be sure to personalize) as Word Document (.doc)
Individual Response to Customs (be sure to personalize) as (.rtf)

Company Response to Customs (as Word Document) .doc
Company Response to Customs (as Rich Text File) .rtf

Please send a copy of your email or letter to AKTI so we can keep track of totals. This will be powerful
information that allows us to tell Customs we know how much opposition there is to their proposed
action.
Spread the word to your friends, co-workers. relatives, and others

Before you can talk to others, you need to understand the situation. Review the AKTI Talking Points.
Also review
AKTI Knife User Data so you understand just how big the universe of folding knife
owners is (and we believe our data is very conservative).

There is also a
YouTube video available that profiles this threat to your ability to carry a knife that U.S.
Customs would create. While their action appears only to be directed at imported assisted-openers,
we fear it would create broad new definitions of switchblade knife that could be applied to all folding
knives, even if they are made in the U.S.

  • Forward a link to www.akti.org to your email list
  • Forward the link to the AKTI YouTube video to anyone who is a knife owner or to
groups whose members are likely to be knife owners … EMTs, firemen, police
officers, military members both active and reserve, hunters, fishermen, campers,
boaters, construction workers, hikers, bikers, gardeners, and so on.
  • Contact your local radio and newspaper and alert them to what is happening
  • Send alerts to publications that serve your hobby interests or organizations you
    belong to
  • Print out  this page and take it to your local knife and gun stores
  • Let them know we NEED to win this one for everyone's knife rights. If Customs
succeeds here, it will open the door to national knife regulation.

and all one-hand opening knives as switchblades.

Customs' proposal will make criminals of 35.6 million Americans
